OBJECTIVES: 1. Develop a multidisciplinary approach, teaming social workers and psychologists with physicians; 2. to help patients begin to express their emotional response and understand their life situation. METHODOLOGY: Patients were attended during 1990 using an existential - humanistic approach; were encouraged to seek counseling as needed on an unscheduled basis; and were also seen on the inpatient services when hospitalized. A continuity relationship was established and separate on psychosocial charts maintained.
RESULTS: Our study comprised 167 patients: 121 men, 30 women and 16 children. The greatest psychosocial difficulties related were: family difficulties, socio-economical difficulties, conflits of sexuality, depression, anxiety and depression + ansiety. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
CONCLUSIONS: We observed improved clinical evolution (72 for men; 14 for women; 07 for children) in patients who underwent social-emotional therapeutic support when socio-emotional issues were resolved or diminished. We believe that the continuation of this work could respond to other psychosocial challenges of AIDS.
