OBJECTIVE: To develop, put into practice, and evaluate an informal education strategy in a community-based program of AIDS and STD for commercial sex workers in Cd. Juarez. METHODOLOGY: A quasi-experimental research design, using pre and post intervention KAP survey was implemented to measure change in attitudes and overt behavior in subjects exposed to an informal educational strategy. The sample was determined through a cluster procedure. Establishment of a data baseline was accomplished through use of a questionnaire with a sample size of 125 women in the pretest, and 207 in the postest. Population covered by this research was subdivided according to stability in their place of work. This permitted us to draw a typology of the work conditions: shifts, work schedules, etc. With the former elements it was possible to draw a general education trend, emphasizing the importance of close community relationships, the belief system of health and sickness and the importance of life experiences.
RESULTS: FEMAP was able to establish an average of 69 training sessions per month in 53 bars. 93% of the population received training from FEMAP. The target population was exposed to an average of 6.6 training sessions per commercial sex worker. Pretest results show that 68% were using condoms and in the postest this increased to 94%.
CONCLUSION: To prevent AIDS and STD, sexual behavior and knowledge can be affected by a continuous interventional educational process, which is based on the realities of daily life.
