OBJECTIVE: Responding to calls from patient advocates, the AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG), responsible for most AIDS clinical research in the US, determined it useful for community constituents to be involved in the development of AIDS research.
METHODS: A group of advocates was called on to create a structure for the Community Constituency Group (CCG), which would be integrated into the ACTG as a full committee. The role of the CCG is to: (1) improve accrual in clinical trials, (2) ensure that trial design addresses patient needs, (3) to influence research priorities, and (4) to disseminate information to communities regarding AIDS research.
RESULTS: The CCG is now made up of 25 community members, reflecting all the communities affected by HIV, taking into account such factors as race, gender, sexual orientation, geographical residence and HIV status. Each CCG member serves as a full member of another ACTG committee and is actively involved in the development and oversight of protocols. Community Advisory Boards have been created at all ACTG sites to provide community input on a local level. The CCG is creating an educational program for patients and community physicians about treatment.
