OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy and safety of ciprofloxacin and Erythromycin in the treatment of Chancroid Ulcers.

METHODS: 240 patients with clinical diagnosis of chancroid were included. Two groups of 120 patients each were studied. One group was treated with Ciprofloxacin 1 gr. PO as a single dose and the second group was treated with standard a dose of Erythromycin for ten days.

RESULTS: No differences were noted between the two groups regarding demographic characteristics, sexual behaviour, or clinical appearance of the ulcers. A good clinical response with Ciprofloxacin and Erythromycin was observed 98% and 95% respectively. More gastrointestinal adverse effects, were observed in the group treated with Erythromycin.

CONCLUSION: Ciprofloxacin 1 gr. PO as single dose, is an effective treatment for clinical proven Chancroid, but Erythromycin is also effective. The two drugs can be recommended as first line therapy of Chancroid.
