OBJECTIVE: (1) To provide an update of ongoing HIV prevention and control activities in schools; (2) to present an overview of the concept, principles and strategies for action for implementing comprehensive school health education (CSHE) and to discuss the rationale and basic content of HIV education within this comprehensive approach; (3) To strengthen international collaboration in ensuring an effective HIV prevention and control programme in schools.
METHOD: Building on the positive experience of the 1991 work session and roundtable discussions at the VII International Conference in Florence, and subsequent meetings in Helsinki and Geneva, a work session will be held prior to the roundtable discussions for international and national programme leaders from the developing and developed countries who have responsibility for school health education and/or promoting health among youth. The focus of the work session will be on CSHE and its key role in HIV prevention and control for children and youth. It will also highlight critical issues and approaches which will be presented by roundtable participants and will draw on the experiences from the WHO/UNESCO ten country projects in schools. OUTCOMES: To combat the spread of HIV and other illnesses and to promote healthy lifestyles, the need for a multidisciplinary and intersectoral approach will be recognized. It will also highlight how to integrate HIV prevention and control into CSHE and identify ways to work together at local, national and international levels. The work session and roundtable discussions have demonstrated the need to share experiences, encourage international collaboration and provide guidance and opportunities to participate. The sessions proposed during this Conference will help to further meet this need and identify ways to go forward.
