Creating a gay network as part of community-based AIDS prevention in Indonesia.

Int Conf AIDS 1993 Jun 6-11; 9:117 (abstract no. WS-D14-5)
Oetomo D, Rianto JJ; Gaya Nusantara/Hotline Surya, Surabaya, Indonesia.

Working with mainstream AIDS NGOs has proven beneficial to gay support groups in several locations in Indonesia. The success story of the partnership of Gaya Nusantara, a gay group, and Hotline Surya, an AIDS NGO, will be told. It is necessary to reach out to gay communities in other locations in Indonesia. This means involving key individuals, and could empower them to set up groups with the facilitation of the AIDS NGOs. Obstacles include homophobia in the general public, while a facilitating factor is the urgency of the matter, which can be used by enlightened individuals in NGOs to argue for the involvement of gay individuals.
