INTRODUCTION: NGOs already working in the field of community health work in Tamil Nadu offer a parallel support system to their respective communities. Our aim was to reach out to the general public especially in rural areas and to create an awareness about HIV/AIDS. STRATEGY: Instead of NGOs being established to handle new epidemics. We decided to incorporate sex/STD/HIV education into the pre-existing community health programme. For this we trained the NGOs' workers/staff through on the spot workshops on sex education/STD/HIV awareness and prevention. We used traditional methods to spread the message. This gave us access to a larger segment of the population. RESULT: By adopting this method, we have been able to develop a network of more than 75 NGOs.
