AIM: To identify any motivational factors which might influence the retention and or dropout of volunteers in a volunteer led A.S.O.

METHOD: Using relevant theories of motivation as a rationale a questionnaire was designed and administered to 194 incoming volunteers. A response rate of 61% was obtained. Volunteers were tracked over a period of one year and their point of departure noted. The results were analysed using factor and regression techniques.

RESULTS: Four motivational factors were identified. It was found that a need for personal control, not being angry about HIV/AIDS and the level of education predicted retention.

CONCLUSIONS: The results are discussed with reference to the application of existing motivation theory for volunteers. Indications for further research are noted including a possible model of volunteer motivation for future reference.
