OBJECTIVE: To search for an alternative method for developing mass awareness on AIDS in a country where the literacy rate is very low, the people have very limited access to the mass media and has difficult terrain.
METHOD: A national street drama group "Sarbanam" was invited to stage a drama about the mode of transmission of the disease, preventive measures to be taken and condom use along the roadside in different remote villages of Nepal. The text of the drama was reviewed by the IEC sub-committee and approved for staging. RESULT: Over 50,000 audiences have seen this drama in 33 places (33 staging). The table below shows superiority of this method in creating mass awareness. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
CONCLUSION: Street drama provides both entertainment and education. It also proved good platform for condom promotion. Among the population in geographically difficult terrain, limited access to mass communication media and low literacy rate, the street drama is the best cost effective means of mass education campaign.
