BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) genital infections in young Swedish women have a high incidence with 2,060 cases per 100,000 women 20-24 years old in 1991 despite the fact that the total number of reported Ct infection has decreased during recent and that gonorrhoea and syphilis has been virtually eradicated as endemic diseases in the country.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the correlation between some behavioural predictors of past and/or current sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
STUDY DESIGN: Average Swedish women (1002) attending family planning and a youth clinic were subjected to a deep interview on sexual behaviour, medical history and physiological and microbiological examinations for current STD:s (Ct infection, gonorrhoea, human papilloma virus, Herpes virus). History of and/or a current STD constituted a CASE.
RESULTS: 34% of the women fulfilled the criteria of being a CASE. Of seven behavioural dimensions that were found to correlate strongly to past and/or current STD, some e.g. casual sex of patient and partner, sexual debut pattern, number of partners, having unprotected sex and drug use correlated significantly (p < 0.000) with each other.
CONCLUSION: The findings offer a possibility to identify a behavioural profile for women acquiring STD:s, even women outside the traditional core groups.
