The effect of counseling on HIV prevalence among blood donors at Nakasero Blood Bank (NBB).

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the role of counseling.

METHODS: Volunteers coming to donate blood were precounselled, which included interviewing and physical observation for health and to avoid Window period and seropositivity. In two and a half years, a total of 3608 qualifiers were bled & tested for HIV Antibodies. They catagorized into New (ND) and Regular (RD) donors. Post-donation counseling was availed to all.

RESULTS: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: 1. Counseling as AIDS education is fighting rate of Seroconversion. 2. Counseling does identify and retain more donors of safe blood.
