OBJECTIVE: The evaluation of the importance of orientation and counseling on HIV/AIDS to achieve a change in behavior.
METHODS: Investigate the records of the charts for daily attendance and prompturaries.
RESULTS: During the period between April 15th 1992 and December 30th 1993 we attended 6,246 persons, an average of 312 clients/month. We delivered 5,315 (85.09%) results 4,523 (85.01%) of which proved negative and 792 (14.59%) positive. The proportion between men and women who undergo the test is of 1.73 to 1. Of the positive results, on the total 609 (76.89%) male and 183 (23.11%) female, we have the proportion of 3; 33 men for each woman. Of the total of negative results delivered 3,352 (74.1%) users applied a change of habits aiming prevention.
CONCLUSION: According to results we point out the importance of orientation and counseling in the unit of anonymous testing on three specific moments out: pre-test group counseling and pos-test individual counseling. This is based on the high percentage (74.1%) of the population who was made conscious of HIV/AIDS prevention.
