OBJECTIVE: To develop a method for counselling HIV positive persons and to make available by modem personal assistance in an anonymous way.

METHODS: In July 1993 we install a software "Psychological Chat" in a personal computer with modem. We spread the information through mass media and BBS. The service is free, people can call at every time and a counselor answer them. Callers do not need to identify themselves.

RESULTS: Within the period July-December the line received around 50 calls a week. From a total of 410 persons, 67% were HIV positive. From the latter ones 85% were aged between 16-25 years. Information regarding safe sex, nutrition and sexual partner were the most required.

CONCLUSIONS: PC modem provides an easy access to counselling and information.
