OBJECTIVE: To compare risk reduction strategies of men and women before and after CT in Kampala, Uganda.

METHODS: HIV risk reduction behaviours of 3000 CT clients at the AIDS Information Centre (AIC) were studies: no sexual activity (NSA) & consistent condom use with steady (CD/S) & nonsteady (CD/NS) partners after pretest counselling (T1) & at 3(T2) and 6(T3) months.

RESULTS: AIC's HIV+- rate was 28%, 22% in men, 35% in women, (p < 10). At T2 1496 men & 1491 women were followed. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Compare to men, women reported higher NSA (HIV+-/HIV-; T1, T2, T3; at pc .0001) and greater CD/S among HIV+- at T2 (p = 021) and greater CD/NS at T1 only (p = 027). All T1/T2 & most T2/T3 comparisons were significant (p < 001).

CONCLUSIONS: Risk reduction strategies differ between men and women at AIC. CT at AIC had a significant positive impact in HIV+- and HIV- clients of both sexes.
