OBJECTIVE: To determine reasons for HIV testing in an anonymous testing site and to correlate them with the result of the HIV test.
METHODS: The clientele of an anonymous testing site in Rio de Janeiro was interviewed by a trained professional, during pre-test counseling, using a standardized and structured questionnaire, for assessing the main reason for testing. Analysis included X2 and OR with 95% CI.
RESULTS: 1023 successive interviews performed in mid-93 were analysed. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Some reasons for HIV testing were clearly associated with the result of the test. Curiosity, precaution and doubt about the sexual behaviour of partners were associated with a negative result, reflecting the role of prevention of the anonymous test. Therefore, HIV related symptoms, medical indication and confirmation of previous results correlated with a positive test. These results suggest that the anonymous test is still being used to diagnose advanced HIV disease in Rio de Janeiro.
