Communities promoting AIDS Counselling and Testing Project (COMPACT).

Int Conf AIDS 1994 Aug 7-12; 10:393 (abstract no. PD0754)
Sapanuchart T; Association for Strengthening Integrated National Health (ASIN), Thailand.

OBJECTIVE: COMPACT aims to strengthen referral networks between village communities, and testing services provided by medical institutions available to villagers, in three districts of northern Thailand.

METHODS: ASIN staff jointly coordinate outreach activities in villages of rural districts, and factories of Lampang Province with government health officials at district and sub-district levels. These outreach teams identify peer group educators among three target populations, married women, teenagers and factory workers. Peer group educators receive training, and educational materials firstly, to create awareness about STD/HIV among their respective populations, and secondly to prompt these populations to make use of counselling and testing services offered at medical institutions in Lampang. Regular follow up visits by the outreach team occur to monitor safer sex indicators among community groups and to support peer group educators with refresher meetings.

DISCUSSION: By working closely with local health officials and with selected members of community groups to encourage STD/HIV awareness and by supporting multisectorial health service development within medical institutions. ASIN attempts to enable individuals to recognize their own risk behaviours and to utilize services which can support their adaptation of safer sexual practices.
