ISSUE/PROBLEM: To achieve behaviour change it is necessary to evaluate people's existing awareness, knowledge and beliefs prior to modifying misconceptions and misunderstandings about HIV/AIDS issues. Formal interview methods can be biased because of moral inhibitions. DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT: To discuss the real significance of AIDS for the participants of a workshop on AIDS prevention, a total number of 69 posters were drawn by 660 persons (323 adults and 337 adolescents). Groups of 6-10 persons spent 10 minutes (without verbal communication) representing the significance of AIDS for themselves through images.

RESULTS: Substantial differences were found between adults and adolescents. The results were the following, for adults and adolescents respectively: correct knowledge about HIV/AIDS transmission (32% vs 85%; X2 = 18.16; p < 0.001); correct knowledge about HIV/AIDS prevention (57% vs 76%; X2 = 1.83; p < 0.05). The use of condom to prevent HIV/AIDS (36% vs 73%; X2 = 8.10; p < 0.025). The association between HIV/AIDS and death (71% vs 32%; X2 = 8.99; p < 0.01). Monsters and devils representing AIDS were found in (39% vs 10% of the drawings; X2 = 6.88; p < 0.05). Worry about psychological and social issues (82% vs 5%). Risky behaviour as cause of HIV/AIDS transmission was represented through red lights or problems along pathways and roads in 32% of adults' drawings. LESSON LEARNED: The participants of the workshop did not know previously that they would interpret the meaning of the drawing. Through this methodology we can observe and correct misconceptions and misunderstandings about the proposed issue, and also develop an specific health education program on HIV/AIDS prevention.
