OBJECTIVE: To find out the problems and needs of AIDS orphans and their guardians in Morogoro Urban METHODS: Prospective study of clients referred to the counselling office at the Regional Office from 1st Dec. 1991 to Oct. 1993. These were interviewed, and arrangements for home visiting were made. 120 households were registered. 80 of these (56.7% were visited by trained counsellors to find out the problems and needs of AIDS orphans and their guardians. A standardised questionnaire format was used.

RESULTS: The total number of AIDS orphans registered in the 80 households visited were 262. 59 (22.5%) had lost both parents and 203 (77.5%) lost one parents. Those who had lost fathers were 140 (59%) and mothers 53 (31%). The most affected group was between 5 and 15 years. Then immediate needs of orphans centred on education, vocational training, parenting, nutrition, shelter and clothing.

CONCLUSIONS: There is need to do a large community based study in Morogoro to identify the proportion of orphans and their needs. There is also an urgent need to identify strategies to tackle the orphan problems. This includes legal means of looking after the property left behind by the deceased.
