OBJECTIVE: To identify the structure of sufferings affecting lives of hemophiliacs and their families in Japan which can be attributed to their HIV infection due to HIV-contaminated concentrates.
METHODS: Simultaneously with an anonymous questionnaire study (see Report by Katahira et al.), a survey was conducted by interviewing 31 out of 47 (as of March, 1993) plaintiffs of the "Tokyo HIV Lawsuit" in 1992 and 1993.
RESULTS: The anonymous questionnaire study has revealed that 47 out of the 50 living infected-subjects always feel uneasy by thinking what will happen if the fact that they have been HIV-infected should become known to others, suggesting that they are trying to put on an unconcerned air in their social lives. The interview survey has then revealed the anger of the victims at the medical-care-caused sufferings, which have crashed their possibilities to make ordinary lives and to achieve self-realization.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Some 40% of hemophiliacs in Japan have been seized with HIV due to medical treatment with concentrates, which is not the "staff of live" for hemophiliacs because cryoprecipitate has already been developed. Prejudice and discrimination against HIV/AIDS victims are considered to have further deteriorated the violation of human rights due to "drug-induced sufferings", impeding their human rights restoration efforts.
