OBJECTIVE: To identify the facts involved in HIV-infection and its medical care among hemophiliacs in Japan.
METHODS: Anonymous study was conducted by sending questionnaires that we prepared to 239 members of Hemophilia Fraternal Group A and to 108 of another similar Group B in 1992 and 1993, respectively.
RESULTS: Out of 148 returned questionnaires, 144 could be used for analyses. 128 members had undertaken HIV-antibody tests and 122 cases obtained their results. 54 cases were HIV-infected, consisting of 41, 6, 3 and 4 of AC, ARC, AIDS and death cases, respectively. The facts involved in their medical care and their expectations and opinions were compiled.
CONCLUSIONS: Although many of the members had been subjected to HIV-antibody tests and informed of their results, it was revealed that, even at the time of this study, there were some cases in which the hemophiliacs had received no tests, no information of the tests results had been provided or no AIDS onset prophylaxis given. These problems must urgently be improved.
