OBJECTIVE: Out of 3,600 Japanese AIDS/HIV+ patients, 60.8% of the patients are hemophiliacs infected by blood products. This presentation deals with their physio-psycho-social problems, and how the Egogram of Transactional Analysis can be used to learn the way they deal with their difficulties.
METHODS: From April, 1992, to January, 1994, we did 160 counseling sessions with 34 AIDS/HIV+ hemophilia patients in the Department of Clinical Pathology in Tokyo Medical College Hospital. During that time, we asked them to fill out Egogram Checklists to ascertain their thinking, feeling, and behavioral patterns.
RESULTS: As they shared their painful experiences with us, we discovered that how they actually coped with their problems could be predicted by the results of the TA Egogram.
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Since the TA Egogram allows us effectively to predict how patients will cope with their difficulties, we can use it to discover appropriate approaches, for helping hemophilia patients with AIDS/HIV+.
