OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the beliefs concerning the risk levels of HIV transmission due to several sexual practices attributed by undergraduate students and to compare them with the AIDS experts evidences. The Rotation Varimax System was used.
METHODS: Brazilian undergraduate students answered a 25 Likert Probability Scale related to sexual practices. The factor analysis was made, using the Rotation Varimax System and considering as minimum values for saturation criteria: > or = 0.50 and Kaiser index: > 1.00. A total of 351 undergraduate students were included, as well as some AIDS experts that presented a clear classification about the sexual practices being studied.
RESULTS: Ten items were put into 3 Factors: A-ORAL SEX (item(1))1: cunnilingus, (1)2: fellatio, (1)3: contact with urine, (1)4: anilingus, (1)5: ejaculation in the partner's mouth); B-SEX WITH CONDOMS (1)6: vaginal intercourse, (1)7: anal intercourse); C-SEX WITHOUT CONDOMS (1)8: sexual intercourse with heterosexual partner, (1)9: vaginal intercourse, (1)10: anal sex).
DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Items 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 showed modal values that mean similar estimation by both groups. (1)3 and (1)4 were underestimated and (1)8 was overestimated by the students. The results indicate adequate knowledge in 70% of the itens but continuing educative action must be provided to them, during graduation course, especially because the ones not included in the modal results have opposite opinions. Knowledge is essential for them as a human being and as a future care giver.
