Int Conf AIDS 1994 Aug 7-12; 10:50 (abstract no. PS12) Osorio-Ramirez MA; GNP+, Mexico City.
ISSUE/PROBLEM. Globally, the AIDS pandemic has exceeded the ability of governments to alleviate its impact. The violations of Human Rights (HR) related with AIDS indicate the need of co-ordinated strategies to amply face the psycho-social consequences. DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT. Ignorance, prejudice and fear still lead to the violations of HR related with HIV/AIDS. Discrimination and stigma influence the policy and decision making processes. Evident examples of negative leadership are, for instance, US immigration restrictions, the attacks to an AIDS hospice in Colombia or the few resources existing to face adequately the pandemic costs in the world. In order to respond in a effective way the face the challenge posed by HR violations, an environmental scan on quality of life is needed. Accessibility to health care and the situation of the different identities of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLH/A) are also valuable indicators. Community organization and action is crucial for the promotion and defense of HR. DISCUSSION/
CONCLUSIONS.: The findings of the environmental scan, in all likelihood, will be used to sensitize leaders, facilitate actions co-ordination and move political will. Likewise, PLH/A are quality partners in the design and implementation of policy related with AIDS. Intergovernmental and international bodies should assume HR protection as a clue of cooperation.
