Sexually transmitted diseases (STD), besides HIV, are a major cause of disease burden, particularly in young adults in the developing world, and some populations of the industrialized world. In contrast to the traditional clinical approach to STD control which focuses on the treatment of self presenting patients with an STD at specialized clinics, the new strategy emphasizes the promotion of safer sexual behaviour, condom provision, and appropriate health care seeking behaviour, provision of effective and acceptable STD case management through the general health system, using simple flow charts based on syndromic diagnosis and treatment algorithms, and intensified STD services for populations at higher risk of STD/HIV. The presentation will focus on public health policies for STD control and prevention, and review experience of STD programmes in countries.
