OBJECTIVE: To evaluate efficiency of particle agglutination test (Serodia) to differentiate single and dual HIV-1/2 infections.

METHODS: One hundred and four consecutive patients attending HIV/AIDS referral outpatient service at MGM Hospital in New Bombay were recruited in the study. Serum samples were tested by ELISA (EIAgen HIV 1-2 Kit, Clone System). The reactive samples on ELISA were tested for single or dual HIV-1 &/or 2 using Serodia particle agglutination assay (Fujirebio). Western blot test using new LAVBLOT-I and new LAVBLOT-II (Pasteur) were done for confirmation and interpreted as per WHO/CDC guidelines.

RESULTS: (table: see text)

CONCLUSIONS: Serodia particle agglutination assay had total agreement with ELISA. The single and dual infections determined with Serodia were in agreement with Western blot in all but one sample. The prevalence of HIV-1 (68.4%), HIV-1 & 2 (22.8%) and HIV-2 (8.8%) was observed.
