OBJECTIVE: To determine the anti-HIV and immunomodulation activities of kamizol, a new derivative from the group of phenylimidazothyazole.

METHODS: Kamizol was obtained by original synthesis using tetramyzole and alkylic reagents. Its anti-HIV activity was studied using infected MT-4 H-9, CEM and U-937 cells lines. The investigation of this activity was made according two parameters:cytopathic effect and p24 antigen accumulation level in culture medium. Acute and chronic toxicity of per os administrated drug was detected in experimental animals. In vitro and in vivo IFN and IL-2 induction as well as NK-cells and phagocytes activity was studied.

RESULTS: We have detected that kamizol has an anti-HIV activity expecially remarkable in U-937 cells line. The level of cell defence is dose-dependent. Kamizol induced the production of gamma-IFN and IL-2, increased the activity of NK- and phagocyte cells, especially neutrophil granulocytes. Preclinical investigation of kamizol showing its superiority comparing to levamizole was also studied.

CONCLUSION: New drug kamizol is a perspective one for studying in HIV-infections models.
