METHODS: A special attempt was made to collect blood samples from prisoners and healthy individuals coming to blood banks for blood donation and also cases reported at STD clinic, Government Rajaji's hospital, Madurai, Tamilnadu, India. Enzyme linked Immunoserbent Assay (ELISA) test was performed by using Wellcozyme, U.K. kit. The study was conducted over a period of 11 months from May, 1994 to March, 1995.
RESULTS: The seroprevalence of HIV among healthy volunteers (Blood donors) revealed an overall positivity of HIV was 0.6% in which males constituted 0.62% and females constituted 0.55%. HIV positivity among patients attending STD clinic was 27.4% and it was in the age group of 21-30 years. It was seen in 29.15% of males and 24.1% of females. Among the prison inmates the HIV positivity was higher (14.2%) in females than 2% among male prisoners.
