OBJECTIVES: To find out the prevalence of markers of treponemal, Hepatitis B-viral and HIV infection in Commercial Sex Workers.
METHODOLOGY: 436 Floating Commercial Sex Workers (FCSW) have been included in the study from the reception center of vagrant homes as a sentinel site where the FCSW interned after being rounded up by the law enforcing agencies. 87 number of Institutionalized Commercial Sex Workers were randomly selected from two brothels of Dhaka city. Qualitative VDRL followed by TPHA for VDRL reactive samples were performed for detection of specific antibodies of Treponema pallidum, Particle Agglutination Test (PAT) was employed for detection of HIV antibody and Hemagglutination Test was done for Hepatitis B virus antigen (HBsAg) detection. The study took one year time.
RESULTS: The prevalence of Syphilis is higher amongst the FCSW 159(36.49%) compared with the prevalence of ICSW 87(28.73%). On the other hand, out of 436 samples of FCSW none was found HIV antibody positive but amongst the ICSW the prevalence rate is 1(1.15%). 17(3.89%) of FCSW and 4(4.59%) of ICSW were found HBsAg positive in the study.
CONCLUSIONS: It is obvious from the study that the FCSW suffers more from Syphilis (GUD) than ICSW. The ICSW are financially more sound and have at least some access to physician for treatment but FCSW are poor and does not have the access to the same. In general from the above findings, it is found that the prevalence of Genital Ulcer Diseases are higher in both groups and as GUD enhances the transmission of HIV, it is inevitable that, Bangladesh is on the volcano of impending HIV epidemic.
