OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of PPNG Among first time STD clinic attenders in Bombay.
METHODS: Consecutive 135 male patients with urethral discharge attending STD clinic at J.J.Hospital in Bombay were studied during 1995. Urethral scrapping was subjected to Gram's stain, modified Thayer Martin (MTM) medium culture, biochemical characterisation and chromogenic cephalosporin (cefinase) for penicillinase production. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Almost 46% of urethral discharge is of gonococcal origin in Bombay.2. PPNG prevalence is 24.2% suggestive of Bombay as hyperendemic.3. Need for regular PPNG surveillance.4. Study justifies use of non-penicillin regimens for treatment of urethral discharges in Bombay.
