OBJECTIVE: To determine prevalence of Isosporosis and other parasites in patients with AIDS associated diarrhea. Method: Between March 1994 to December 1995, 157/1519 (10.33%) patients with HIV/AIDS presenting with diarrhea were studied at ARCON centre at J.J Hospital, Bombay. Fecal specimens of 123/157 (78.34%) cases were examined by microscopy, modified ZN staining, microplate ELISA assay for cryptosporidiosis.html">cryptosporidium and microbial cultures. Repeated episodes of diarrhea were also studied in 17/123 (13.82%) patients.

RESULTS: Parasites identified 47/123 (38.21%) cases (table: see text)

CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of 15.45% of Isosporosis is high. 5/19 (26.31%) cases of Isosporosis treated with co-trimoxazole showed recurrence. An unusual parasitic agent Trichomonas hominis was documented in 3 males.
