OBJECTIVE: Detection of HIV infection in patients attending STDs and Dermatological clinic.

METHODS: We investigated 464 patients for HIV infection during the year 1995. 300 patients were taken from STD clinic and 164 were taken from Dermatology clinic. The criteria of selecting patients were as follows, those having sexually transmitted diseases with high risk behaviour (300), oropharangeal candidiasis (8), extensive psoriasis (31), widespread seborrhoeic dermatitis (26), generalised tinea (12), persistent generalized lymphadenopathy (6), Herpes zoster (HZ) with recurrence, cutaneous dissemination or in younger age groups (23), disseminated scrofuloderma (19), extensive or giant molluscum contagiosum (2), recurrent pyoderma (23), Kaposi's sarcoma (1), oral hairy leucoplakia (4), streptococcal gangrene (9).

RESULTS: A total 21 (4.74%, 5 female, 16 male) patients were found HIV-positive. Of these 21, 5 were from STD clinic (2 had primary syphilis, 2 had condylomata accuminata and 1 with mixed infection of primary syphilis and chancroid) and 16 were from Dermatology clinic (-4 out of 31 patients of psoriasis and 4 out out of 26 patients of seborrhoeic dermatitis, 2 out of 23 cases of HZ,1 each patient from other groups except recurrent pyoderma.

CONCLUSION: In Dermatological & STD practice, patients with high risk behaviour and suspected cutaneous manifestation related to HIV infection, should be counselled for the risk factor for HIV infection, and where appropriate, offered HIV antibody testing.
