OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of various oral lesions in HIV-infected and AIDS patients at the Dental College and Hospital, Trivandrum, India and to compare it with the reports from other parts of the world.
METHODS: The oral lesions in Ninety-six HIV-infected including AIDS patients referred to the outpatient department of the Dental college hospital were examined and recorded.
RESULTS: In 75% of patients one or more HIV related lesion of the oral mucosa was recorded. In 8% of these patients oral lesion was the first manifestation of HIV infection. Oral candidiasis and periodontal disease are the commonly observed disorders. Occasional manifestations such as hairy leukoplakia, hyperpigmentation etc., are seen in 20 per cent of the patients. Unusual lesions such as Tuberculous ulcer of the tongue (two cases), squamous cell carcinoma of the gingiva and lips were also present.
CONCLUSIONS: Except for the tuberculous ulcer the prevalence and clinical features of the oral lesions are similar to the reports from other countries. In India tuberculosis is rampant and the number is increasing significantly with the addition of HIV-infected population. The role of Dentist in making an early diagnosis of HIV is emphasised.
