OBJECTIVE: 1)To compare trends of AIDS epidemics among heterosexual women in three areas in the State of Rio de Janeiro; 2) To provide information for the evaluation of the programs interventions in these regions.

METHODS: Female heterosexual cases were selected and analyzed by period and residence at the diagnosis. According to the year of diagnosis, all cases were distributed in two periods: A) 1984-89 and, B) 1990-95. Three geographic areas were considered - the capital city, the metropolitan area, and the inner cities - to compare the trends by residence. The analyze was made by contingence tables and crosstabulation using these two variables.

RESULTS: From 1982 to 95, 11.694 AIDS cases were reported to the STD/AIDS Program. 16.6% (1970) were women aged more than 13 y.o. From this total, 742 (37,6%) cases were transmitted through heterosexual intercourse. According to the year of diagnosis and residence, and by comparing period A to B, this study has shown that the impact of AIDS epidemics among heterosexual women is greater at inner cities than in metropolitan area and in the capital city. Along these two periods, at inner cities, the proportion of cases in this group increases three times (from 14.2% to 45.4%), doubled at metropolitan area (from 14.3% to 37.7%) and had slowest grow at the capital city (from 27.4% to 39.4%). Statistical analysis shows significant association between the variables.

CONCLUSION: This study will be used to persuade decision makers from inner cities to expand and improve AIDS control policies. The results are also a strong rationale for AIDS Programs to join efforts with Women Health Care Programs. considered.
