OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of HIV-positive cases among urban blood donors in India.
METHODS: 44,488 consecutive blood donors at Apollo Hospital, Madras, during 1992-95 were screened for HIV 1&2 using ABBOTT HIV-1/HIV-2, 3rd generation plus EIA (Enzyme Immuno Assay)
RESULTS: 90% of donors were male. 47% of men and 42% of women were less than 30 yrs of age. 88% of the donors were replacement donors. The overall prevalence of HIV-positive cases is 1.9/1000. It is marginally more in men (2.0/1000) compared to women (1.5/1000) The incidence in men less than 30 yrs is (2.7/1000) which is significantly higher as compared to 1.3/1000 incidence in men more than 30 yrs. In women the incidence increases with age. It is only 0.5/1000 in women less than 30 yrs. while it increases to 1.5/1000 in women more than 30 yrs. The incidence of HIV-positive cases has shown a steady increase since 1992 when it was 0.4/1000 to 2.6/1000 in 1995.
CONCLUSION: The incidence of HIV-positive cases is about 1.9/1000 donors. The incidence is more in young men, less than 30 yrs of age (sexually active group). The alarming observation is the steady increase in the overall incidence of HIV-positive cases in recent years in blood donor population.
