OBJECTIVE: Recruitment for an open cohort of 500 male homo/bisexual participants, 18-59 years, was initiated in October/94 to (1) estimate HIV incidence; (2) evaluate preventive intervention strategies and (3) prepare for future vaccine trials.
METHODS: Participants are followed through psycho-social interviews, clinical and lab examinations every 6-months.
RESULTS: Of the 201 participants enrolled, 6 were considered lost: 3 on the first and on the second round (6 months) of interview and clinical/lab examinations. One seroconversion has been observed up to this date. Preliminary analysis (157 subjects) showed: (1) Recruitment strategies: "snow ball" (24.2%), newspaper ad (22.1%) and pamphlets (18.4%) were the more efficacious techniques; (2) Lab test: including CD4/CD8, were within normal range; (3) Psycho-social interview, with questions addressing sexual orientation and practices, alcohol and drug abuse, HIV infection knowledge and HIV vaccine information: (a) mean age 25.3 years; (b) race: White (44.7%), Negro (7.9%) and Mullato (47.4%); (c) education: college (29.6%), senior high/technical (42.7%) and junior high/elementary (27.6%); (d) civil status: (a) single (96.7%); (e) income: 1-3 Brazilian minimun wage BMW (33.1%), 3-6 BMW (31.1%), 6-10 BMW (11.9%) and 10+ BMW (15.2%); (f) number of sexual partners in the last six months: 0-5 (75.6%), 6-10 (10.4%) and 10+ (14.0%).
CONCLUSIONS: These results showed the cohort, when compared to the Belo Horizonte population, to belong to a higher socio-economic class. An attempt is being made to recruit subject from other social brackets, who may present different HIV risk behavior.
