Spreading of HIV-infection in Russia: comparative study of homo and heterosexual population.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the perspective of spreading of HIV-infection among Russian homosexuals in comparison with population in whole.

METHODS: Epidemiological analysis of situation from 1987 to 1995 and sociological studies in South of Russia. It was analyzed 824 cases with determined cause of infection and interrogated 242 citizens of Rostov/Don in age of 16-35 (122 males and 120 women) by method Hall test. Similar mail interrogation of 50 subscribers of local homosexual journal was carried out. Results. From 824 cases of HIV-infection 260 persons have got virus by homosexual way (31, 5%), 232 persons (28,2%)-heterosexual way. The frequence of reveal of HIV-infection among homo and bisexuals was 18 times more than that of the whole population. 86% of interrogated homosexuals indicate, that they have never got any information about AIDS (among heterosexuals the same answer -8%). Only 3% read about AIDS in papers (63%). 13% (23 understand the main point of safety of sexual practice). Two thirds of interrogated were never inspected on HIV-infection (65%). 16% (63%) have constant partner. 43% (16%) have sexual contacts every days.93% took part in group sex (21%). Only 17% altered their behaviour under influence of information about AIDS (57%). 66% never used condom during sexual contact (12%). Only 6% of interrogated began to use condom under influence of sanitary propaganda (28%). 73% have sexual connections with foreigners(10%).

CONCLUSION: For restriction of spreading of AIDS among homosexuals information system of propaganda is necessary.
