OBJECTIVE: We recently initiated Projeto Praca Onze, a HIVNET-sponsored HIV seroincidence study among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Rio de Janeiro. We interviewed volunteers at enrollment to determine their willingness to participate in future HIV intervention studies.

METHODS: Ninety-eight potentially eligible 18-50 years old MSM had a detailed questionnaire administered upon entry into the study. The questions focused on the willingness of subjects to participate in HIV intervention studies.

RESULTS: Of the 98 subjects, 9 (9%) were HIV seropositive and excluded from further analyses. Of the remaining 89 subjects, 72 (81%) reported a willingness to participate in future vaccine efficacy trials, 12 (13%) stated that they would not participate, and 5 (6%) were not sure. Among the 12 who stated they would not participate, the most frequently mentioned reasons were not wanting to be a guinea pig (92%), fear of becoming infected by the vaccine (83%), fear of having a positive serologic test for HIV (75%), and lack of trust in the pharmaceutical industry (67%). Among 61 subjects reporting receptive anal intercourse, 28 (46%) expressed a willingness to participate in studies of a rectal microbicide containing nonoxynol-9.

CONCLUSIONS: The majority of the subjects participating in our cohort study expressed a willingness to participate in future HIV vaccine efficacy trials and nearly half are willing to participate in a study of a rectal microbicide. These and other data from our cohort suggest that it may be an excellent population in which to study interventions to prevent HIV transmission.
