OBJECTIVE: To determine the reasons for condom use among female callers in the Remedios AIDS Hotline.
METHODS: Data from the Hotline Call Report was used. The subject was limited to all female callers of the Hotline from January to December 1995.
RESULTS: A total of 1555 female callers was recorded from January to December 1995. 437 ( 28 % ) were found to have risk exposure. Out of 437 female callers with risk exposure, only 5.7% used condom. Birth control was the most common reason of condom use ( 60% ) compared to HIV prevention ( 36% ). Another reason for condom use is to lubricate during sexual intercourse.
CONCLUSION: The data suggest that awareness of condom use as an HIV prevention method aside from birth control needs more stress in implementing intervention and educational programs.
