OBJECTIVE: To detect the prevalence of HIV-1/HIV-2 antibodies in children with maltreating.
METHODS: From July 1995 to January 1996, 160 serum samples of abused and maltreated children under 13 years old were analyzed. These children lived in Guadalajara, Mexico in an Social Assistance Institute: "Hospicio Cabanas". According to their antecedents they were divided in the following groups: sexual abuse 12 (7.5%); emotional deprivation due to family absence 87 (54.37%); and abandonment 25 (15.62%); abuse or fetal neglected by prostitution and/or mother's substance abuse 31 (19.37%) and children from mothers with mental illness 5 (3.12%).The serum were tested by ELISA for HIV-1/HIV-2 antibodies (ABBOTT Recombinant HIV-1/HIV-2 3RD Generation EIA ABBOTT GmbH Diagnostika Germany) after two weeks of the birth date in case of suspect of vertical transmission and three months later of last risk event in the others children who do not have this risk factor.
RESULTS: All the analyzed samples were negative in the detection of anti HIV-1/HIV-2 antibodies.
CONCLUSIONS: In this study, none of the children were positive. However, due that the principal risk for the acquisition of the HIV in children is the maternal route and that the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, has one of the highest number of females infected in Mexico, it is necessary to increase and to follow the sample, in order to have an opportune prevention and detection in this Target group.
