ISSUES: Information about and reduction of HIV-STD infection among the sex-workers of the Comune di Venezia, to develop community care policy.
PROJECT: Outreach work accompaniment and cultural mediation, training of peer educators, information on AIDS and prevention work, networking with social and health services, counseling, planning and evaluation by peer educators of printed materials for prevention, vaccination and medical support for immigrant sex-workers. Result: 740 contacts with 92 sex-workers of different ethnic communities: 29 of them were accompanied for counseling, HIV/STD screening and hepatitis vaccination, gynecological tests. Networking in local public and private agencies of the district.
LESSONS LEARNED: The sex-workers have difficulties with access to local health services because of: lack of information about the services offered by local facilities; poor medical basic knowledge by target; hard troubles caused by illegal status. Difficulty in developing in the short run an HIV-STD prevention project beyond emergency towards a long-run prevention planning.
