OBJECTIVES: To help community members in identification and interpretation of risky practices for HIV/STDs.To design a community action plan based on the missing gaps (risk factors).

METHODS: Programme implementors with community actors used PRA/PLA methods in 7 communities using social-demographic maps; annual events, charts and activity calendars. Reflective group discussions conducted after each exercise.

RESULTS: As a result of using participatory learning action methods both community and programme staff understood better the risky behaviors, gender differences; developed preventive educational strategies and shared ideas with their partners.

CONCLUSION: The methods proved to be very useful in the identification of local sexual practices and has assisted the programme in the design implementation and monitoring our activities.
