Int Conf AIDS 1996 Jul 7-12; 11:489 (abstract no. Pub.D.1331)
Muzigo N; TASO Mulago, Kampala, Uganda.

ISSUE: Sero status disclosure can lead to reduction of HIV/AIDS associated fears and stigma and can be a good strategy to enlist care and support from family members and friends.

METHODS: Through counselling empowerment, 120 HIV+ women were followed from May 1994 to November 1995 at counsellor-client level at The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) and ISS Clinic in Mulago Hospital Kampala-Uganda to determine sero status disclosure how, where and why.

RESULTS: 105 of the women revealed their sero status, 73 revealed to their partners, while 105 revealed to both spouses and other family members/friends.As a result they have received care and support from family members, friends and care givers and reduced fear among them and bared no sense of stigma.

LESSONS LEARNED: Empowering HIV-infected persons to internalise and understand advantages of sero status revealing, creates care and support for them and leads to reduction of stigma, thus leading to a productive life.
