OBJECTIVE: To determine whether human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) sequences are present in AIDS patients diagnosed with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) in Argentina.

METHODS: Biopsy samples were collected from four HIV+ homosexual men diagnosed with cutaneous KS. PCR was performed to amplify a 233-bp from the KS - 330 Bam fragment sequence of HHV-8. PCR amplified products were directly sequenced.

RESULTS: All four samples were strong positive for the HHV-8 sequences. Two of them, directly sequenced by PCR were found to have a high degree of hemology with the published sequences (94% and 95%) respectively.

CONCLUSIONS: The DNA sequence analysis of the Human Herpes Virus 8 (HHV-8) indicates that this virus is very conserved and one strain can be found in AIDS associated Kaposi's sarcoma patients in Argentina. This result confirms the findings obtained in samples from the United States, France, Africa and Taiwan suggesting that a distinct herpes virus-like agent may be closely associated with Kaposi's sarcoma.
