This study examined the predicting factors of the intentions to adopt safer sex practices among the Chinese college students. The students' safer sex behaviours and issues involved in influencing their behaviours were explored. One hundred and sixty-one males and two hundred and sixty-seven females participated in the study. Results revealed that sexual behaviours among the students were on the rise while the rate of safer sex practices remained to be low. Despite the potential risks, some participants still acknowledged the possibility of engaging in a "one-night stand". Safer sex practices in terms of current status and future intentions were examined separately. The best predictors for current sexual behaviours were facilitators necessary for actual practices of safer sex behaviours and attitudes toward AIDS, whereas the future intentions to adopt safer sex practices were predicted by the facilitators variable as well as the self-efficacy towards safer sex. Impetus to future research efforts and applied implications for interventions were discussed.
