BACKGROUND: HIV - 1 transmission during intercourse has become a primordial aspect of the AIDS epidemic. Efforts to reverse or stop this distrubing trend include development of a safe broad spectrum, female controlled Microbicides for use during intercourse. Vaginal Microbicide Gel formation SUNRAY - 1000 has been demonstrated anti-retroviral activity and found effectively inactivating HIV in vitro studies. The active ingredient in it is a naturally occurring compound and is totally safe.

METHODS: To access the safety and acceptability of SUNRAY - 1000 among sexually active 125 women applied 2 mi., of the gel deep vaginally 30 minutes before intercourse using an applicator for 21 days while encouraged to have intercourse at least once in a couple of days during November 1999 - April 2000. Naked eye vaginal sperculam examination without colposcopy have been performed before and on days 1,3, 6 and 9. Participants have been asked about the product acceptability, colour, smell, sexual pleasure and feeling in the vagina.

RESULTS: 117 women completed 21 days of use, 8 women stopped on 3rd, 4th and 6th day due to mensus. Among the completed group of SUNRAY - 1000, 88 (75%) women considered extra lubrication and sexual pleasure during intercourse and found it convenient to use, pleasant, non-irritating and liked the odour and colour. 12 (10%) women complained feeling of unusual wetness after the product insertion. 9 (8%) women found it messy and 5 (4%) women reported slight discomfort, 3 (2%) had redness. No incidence of Oedema, Peticle haemorrhage, discharge or ulcer.

CONCLUSIONS: Thus SUNRAY - 1000 can be safely recommended, as it inactivates vital HIV- I and STD pathogens (Trichomonas vaginalis, Neisseria gonorrhea) while inexpensive and has an established safety record for human use.
