ISSUES: As the administration of protease inhibitors to HIV/TB co-infected patients is probematic due to drug interactions with rifampin; it is important for HIV/AIDS clinics to identify TB cases and ensure that patients are properly treated. Project: From 1998-1999, 75 clients co-infected with HIV/TB were followed in the HIV/AIDS clinic at Taso Mulago Center. Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) for TB was administered to clients from 7 public health clinics assigned according to their place of residence. The HIV/TB liason nurse obtained information on TB bacteriology and treatment from the public health clinics and organised the information in the clinic chart. CD4 cell counts and viral loads were recorded.
RESULTS: The Liason nurse cordinated TB information from 7 public health clinics. 30 clients were started on protease inhibitor which necessitated a change in TB treatment regimen from rifampin to rifabutin.
CONCLUSION: Assigning a nurse in the HIV/AIDS clinic as a liaison to the TB public health clinic service provider will ensure better HIV/AIDS care.
