ISSUE: Integration of HIV/AIDS prevention into home care programme has a double effect over care and support.
DESCRIPTION: The AIDS integrated programme of the Ndola Catholic Diocese, Zambia, has integrated AIDS prevention activities into the home care programme. 750 volunteers and 28 community nurses- all care givers- have participated in the integration process in 21 shanty compounds. The processs involved; HIV/AIDS sensitisation, training of facilitators, training of volunteers and nurses in animation skills, outreach activities. Since 1998; all volunteers and nurses are sensitised. 21 nurses and 21 volunteers trained as facilitators. Facilitators have trained all volunteers in animation skills.
RESULTS: From one case study compound indicate that; 80 volunteers and their spouses attended 2 spouse meetings. Family discussions have been ongoing in volunteers' homes. 25 youths- children of voluneers- are trained as community animators. The youths have formed a 'new generation anti-AIDS movement' in their community. Each volunteer animates 10 patients. Volunteers and youths have extended animation to churches in their compound. Conclussion: Lessons learnt are: Volunteers have the problem of HIV/AIDS at heart. They are concerned with the increase in the chronic illnesses and indeed their care workload. Volunteers appreciate the involvement in preventive care. Empowering them with information on HIV/AIDS and animation skills enhances increased community participation. Involvement of care givers in integration of preventive care is an entry point for stigma reduction in communities.
