BACKGROUND: Sentinel Surveillance has been conducted in antenatal clinics since 1990. Initially there were 13 sites additional sites were added in 1995 to 22 sites and currently there are 35 sites, the new sites were added in the year 2001.

METHOD: Sentinel Surveillance returns were received from the sites in the National AIDS/STD Control Programme at the end of September 2001. Data entry was done using EPI 2000. Validations for records transfer and quality assurance procedures were undertaken. Analysis was done to determine site prevalence and extra polations done to estimate the district, provincial and National prevalence.

RESULTS: Five sites (71.4%) marked as rural showed declining HIV prevalence rates, two (35%) sites of the rural sites showed that the prevalence rates were stable. Some new rural areas showed quite a higher prevalence rate than had been previously assumed. Six urban (50%) areas showed declining in HIV prevalence rate. Four (33%) had prevalence that is stabilizing and two sites (17%) had rising HIV prevalence.

CONCLUSIONS: According to 2001 data, majority of rural and urban sites are showing prevalences that have either stabilized or declining. This implies that the National prevalence may be stabilizing. Further 2002 data is required to have a clear picture of the scenario.
