Background - The HIV seroprevalence in women in Sao Paulo is one of the highest in Brazil and HIV testing is recommended for all pregnant women. In order to control the mother-to-child transmission, the Brazilian Ministry of health estabillished in july 1996 a special program to reduce vertical transmission. Training programs, use of rapid HIV testing and public campaigns and Oral,IV,AZT has been made available free of charge to pregnant women in Brazil. In an effort to determine its we analyses and interviews 1154 pregnant women. Method - During 30 days, all women pregnancy attending a 4 large public ante natal clinic receive HIV conseling and individual consent for HIV using simples rapid test and confirmed by Elisa. HIV positive mothers were put on Oral, iv, azt. Results - Out of the 993 women pregnant screened, 9 (0,9%) were HIV positive (Elisa) before. 6 (0,60%) women pregnant were HIV positive in rapid testing. HIV seroprevalence in the 4 ante natal clinic in Sao Paulo, was 0,6%. Conclusion - Results of this survey show HIV seroprevalence is higher in Sao Paulo, yet. The epidemiological results show that there is a need for implementing a program for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission. The study highlights the urgent need for routine offering of antenatal HIV testing with counselling and the development of continuing education project in counselling for health professionals, specially for maternal and child health care providencers.
