BACKGROUND: Opportunistic infections of the eye in HIV-infected children is rarely studied in India.
METHODS: Ten HIV-infected children below 12 years of age were examined for ophthalmic lesions. All the children acquired infection by vertical mode. Six children were from CDC clinical category 'B' and four from category 'C'. Each patient underwent external eye examination, slit lamp and fundus examination.
RESULTS: Ocular lesions were found in 4 (40%) children. Anterior segment involvement in the form of squint, mollascum contagiosum, lid infection and leukoma was seen in each one of them. The patient with squint was from category 'C', and had posterior segment involvement in the form of cytomegalovirus retinitis. Six (60%) patients had normal eye examination.
CONCLUSIONS: Ocular lesions with opportunistic pathogens are common in late stages of HIV disease. So, these children should be periodically screened for ocular lesions.
